This non-representational piece carries many emotions of the artist. The artist utilized many techniques that were brand new to them at the time. The bold and brash strokes show the refined strength in it. The black and white feathery aesthetic is inspired by Zobel’s work, specifically Icarò. The dripping technique expresses sadness and watery fluidity.

The outer rings were made by a toothbrush and was scrubbed down to a fine point. The darkness that surrounds it is up to interpretation to the viewer. The form of the large parts is made by significantly watering down the paint and spreading it. The lower right area of circles is made by bubble wrap on paint. All in all the combination of multiple techniques created a piece that takes the viewers eyes through a journey.

The artist first created a more colorful version of this, however deemed it did not express the message enough. The artist used a variety of techniques, using different brushes, layering the black and white over and over. The skull behind the mask was the focal point in the first and second draft of the work. the hands in black are representative of the minorities who are under attack and denied rights everyday, Hong Kong protests, BLM protests, EJK protests. The flag was not meant to be in white to signify defeat, however more so to signify the rising of a nation against corrupt leaders. All of these elements underneath a swirl in the corner to insinuate a storm is coming.

Censory Overload

Acrylic
2020

The artist created this piece as a form of non-representaional self-expression. The artist used a variety of techniques with his brush strokes. The technical work is a callback to the first assignment given in his Visual Arts class which was to create an optical illusion.
The artist used his repressed feelings to create this style, the underlying face shows the part of his emotions that are hidden from the surface but are trying to peak through.
The color scheme used is simple primary colors to give wider contrast and a breakable pattern. The “Censory” part of the name comes from his words being censored and is a play on the term “Sensory Overload” in which the artist often feels overwhelmed with situations and has had panic attacks.
